Style: 13E American Stout
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Alcoholic Astringent
Bottle Inspection: All Good
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
Citrus hops jump to the front and are followed by sweet, molasses, chocolate and coffee notes.
9 / 12

Appearance:
Pours deep black with garnet highlights. Medium amount of tan head that persists thru the entire glass.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Smooth coffee and bittersweet chocolate flavors dominate, but give way to a medium level of hop bitterness. Hop flavor is present and is citrusy, earthy and resiny. Picking up a medium level of ashy, acrid flavors from what tastes like a high level of roasted or black barley.
14 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Full body with medium carbonation. Astringency that lingers long in to the finish - most likely from a mix of roasted malts and high level of hop bitterness. Full and creamy. High level of warmth on the first sip. Warmth stays in the chest. Astringency and alcohol actually almost burn the back of my throat.
3 / 5

Overall:
This beer really fits nicely into the style guidelines with the exception of the high alcohol. If it was a little bit less intense, this could easily be a 40 point beer. The astringency is probably just a little more than should be there, so maybe try decreasing the hop bitterness or adding the dark grains at sparge to decrease the acrid/ashy taste.
