Judge: Chris Marasti-Georg (c.marastigeorg@gmail.com)
Judge Qualification: Non-BJCP
Entry ID: 69889567
Style: 3A Vienna Lager
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Diacetyl Metallic
Bottle Inspection: All Good
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
Aroma dominated by malt. Early blast of caramel/sweet malt. Very rich character. Touch of diacetyl? No roast character, no hop aroma, no DMS.
7 / 12

Appearance:
Substantial tan head with larger bubbles. Incredibly clear, amber beer.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Rich malt dominates the flavor. It is slightly sweet, with more complexity than the aroma. Nice munich malt-type character. balanced bitterness in the finish, with a touch of a metallic aftertaste. No discernable hop flavor.
15 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Medium carbonation, fairly crisp. No alcohol warmth. Perhaps a touch of astringency in the finish.
4 / 5

Overall:
This is a pretty well balanced beer with good flavor and character. It is very easy to drink. I'd like to see more complexity in the aroma, and see sweetness levels drop. Perhaps a higher attenuating yeast, or less caramel malt.
7 / 10

Total Score: 36 / 50

Style Accuracy: 4 / 5
Technical Merit: 4 / 5
Intangibles: 4 / 5

Style: 3A Vienna Lager
Beer Info:
Descriptors:
Bottle Inspection: All Good
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
Low amount of lightly toasted malt and low amounts of corn-like sweetness. No hop aroma. Light apple-like esters - not acetaldehyde. No diacetyl or other off aromas.
6 / 12

Appearance:
Medium copper color with brilliant clarity. Low amount of white head that retreats to the edge of the glass and persists.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Low amount of complex, rich malt flavor with ample hop bitterness to keep things in balance. No roasted or caramel flavors. Very low toasty malt flavor. Low amount of corn-like sweetness.
13 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Medium-light body with medium carbonation. Light alcohol warmth with minimal creaminess. No astringency. No other palate sensations.
4 / 5

Overall:
Overall a very good example of the style. The apple esters are a little out of place and it's lacking the complex malt flavors that define the style.
