Score Sheet #1 - Judged by a National judge and scored 28

Judge: Andy Weigel (andyweigel@gmail.com)
Judge Qualification: Provisional Judge
Entry ID: 37277659
Style: 7B California Common Beer
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Astringent Estery Oxidized
Bottle Inspection:
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
Light caramel and bready/toasty sweetness jump to the foreground, followed by light fruity esters - reminiscent of apple, peach and pear. Lacking hop aroma. No diacetyl.
6 / 12

Appearance:
Copper/light amber with minimal amount of off-white head that persists as tight bubbles around the edge of the glass. Reasonable clarity.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Rich, lightly toasted bread crust flavors dominate the palate followed by a moderately high level of hop bitterness that last long in to the finish.
11 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Some light alcohol warmth, light hop astringency. Medium-low carbonation and medium body. Finish is crisp and dry, but leaves a puckering sensation on the back of my palate.
3 / 5

Overall:
Hop aroma really seems to be lacking for this style. The bitterness is there, but it just isn't showcasing the Northern Brewer hops. This bottle is almost exactly 6 months old and has been sitting on a shelf since then, so I'm guessing the hop aroma and flavor have disappeared due to poor handling.

Score Sheet #2 - Judged by a National judge and scored 25

Judge: Andy Weigel (andyweigel@gmail.com)
Judge Qualification: Provisional Judge
Entry ID: 37277659
Style: 7B California Common Beer
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Solvent
Bottle Inspection:
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
High amount of fruity esters - cherry and peach with some light pear or apple in there. Caramel sweetness, which is followed by a faint woody aroma. Seems to be missing the characteristic minty, earthy Northern Brewer hop aroma. Light woody notes are there, but not enough to really let me know it's Northern Brewer.
6 / 12

Appearance:
Brilliantly clear, medium amber with a medium off-white head that dissipates to form a ring of tight bubbles around the collar of the glass.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Fruity flavors roll across the palate first - similar to apple, pear or other light fruits. More like esters than acetaldehyde. Medium caramel sweetness with ample hop bitterness to keep it balanced. Unable to detect any real hop flavor. Esters are probably a little higher than they should be.
10 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Picking up a slight solventy character. Medium body with medium-low carbonation. Light astringency. Carbonation is probably just a little bit low.
0 / 5

Overall:
This sample is really missing the character Northern Brewer hop aroma and flavor. It seems as though the hop character has probably dropped out. A fresher sample would probably be better to judge.

Score Sheet #3 - Judged by a National judge and scored 29

Judge: Andy Weigel (andyweigel@gmail.com)
Judge Qualification: Provisional Judge
Entry ID: 37277659
Style: 7B California Common Beer
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Metallic
Bottle Inspection:
Bottle Comments: 3MG - 3/2013 - Judged 6/22/2013

Aroma:
Moderate of caramel and toasty malt sweetness take center stage and then give way to a lighter amount of woody, Northern Brewer-esque hop character. An almost metallic noses is present as it warms.
7 / 12

Appearance:
Large amount of fluffy, slightly off white head that persists. Large amount of co2 bubbles stream to the surface, keeping the head going. Deep gold, light amber. Brilliant clarify.
3 / 3

Flavor:
Harsh alcohol flavors immediately stomp across my palate. Not nearly as much caramel and toasty malt character as the aroma would lead me to expect. Light apple, pear or other light fruity ester. Metallic twang is slightly masked by a moderately assertive bitterness. Finish is slightly sweet.
11 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Medium body with medium-high carbonation. Moderate amount of hop derived astringency that lasts long in to the finish.
2 / 5

Overall:
Moderate amount of alcohol and metallic flavors are too much to really get past. Seems to be lacking the signature Northern Brewer hop character. This one is better than the other 2 older samples I had, but it still seems to be lacking.

Bottle Comments: i would recommend to a friend

Aroma:
Moderate malt and hops. The malt is grainy and a little toasty, the hops are woody. Medium-low esters. Aromas are a little muted -- might be old. Light caramel develops as it warms. Fairly subtle but clean.
9 / 12

Appearance:
Tall off-white head, tiny bubbles. Light to medium-amber color. Very clear. Head settled slowly, rocky.
2 / 3

Flavor:
Medium malt, light grain and caramel, lightly toasty. Medium to medium-high hop bitterness. Moderate hop flavor, woody. Dryish finish with grainy malt and lingering bitterness. Light esters. Seems a bit muted/aged but still showing classic style.
14 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Medium-high to high carbonation -- a little high. Medium body. No astringency, creaminess or warmth.
5 / 5

Overall:
A bit stale. This is a tough beer to get fresh. It goes downhill fast. It's amazing at the brewery and in the local area but can be difficult to find fresh in the rest of the country. Has all the right components and balance but the key attributes are low in intensity compared to the best, freshest examples.
