Style: 19C American Barleywine
Beer Info:
Descriptors: Alcoholic
Bottle Inspection:
Bottle Comments:

Aroma:
Raisins, malt, and fruity carmel right up front. Some piney hop character following. Cannot distinguish if fruitiness is from yeast character or intense malt base.
12 / 12

Appearance:
Surprising clear. Dark amber. Head exists in warmer state but is absent when colder. No lace.
2 / 3

Flavor:
A wallop of toffee, caramel, some roastiness, oak, vanilla, and stone fruit up front. Very boozy. Aftertaste is persistently bitter but does not clash by any amount. Esters are minute, mostly highlighting the fruitiness of the mix of malt/hop. Sweet finish but not underattenuated. No oxidative notes. This is exactly what I expect for the style.
19 / 20

Mouthfeel:
Stickiness and a punch of alcoholic warmth. Bordering on astringent. Tannins give a reminder of oak. Carbonation is perfect for style.
3 / 5

Overall:
An absolutely enjoyable rendition of the style. Malt character is predominant, but very minor tweaks are needed to bolster it. Consider mashing slightly higher, aging longer, and, if sparging, lowering the temperature and pH.
8 / 10
