Brew Cleaner Lagers

Here’s a couple of quick pictures illustrating how I brew cleaner lagers. The idea is to go from your kettle in to a larger carboy and allow all of the trub, cold break, etc. to settle and then you rack from above the material that has settled. A similar method of how to remove trub has been described in BYO.
This method works well if you’re planning on reusing your lager yeast in other batches. It helps to keep unwanted material from getting mixed up in the yeast and out of future beers. This helps to create an overall cleaner, clearer lager.
How to Brew Cleaner Lagers
- Cold break and trub settling out.
- Cold break and trub totally settled and ready to be moved to primary.
- First pull from kettle – 1 liter to be used in a starter for another beer.
- Starter wort settled and ready to decant.
